The long one. South on the A7 with Bauska Castle as the first stretch of the legs, then Rundale — Rastrelli's baroque palace, the closest thing the Baltics have to Versailles. Cross into Lithuania and the Hill of Crosses appears out of flat farmland; it is quieter and stranger than any photograph. Sleep in Vilnius, walk the old town at dusk, and take the backroads home.
